The story of Halloween goes
back to the ancient times. The people
who lived in Britain and Ireland thousands of years ago were called the Celts. They celebrated New Year on the
1st of November. Because October 31 was the day when the sun set, the Celts
believed that the sun entered the underworld for a short time. That’s why the
gates of the underworld were open
and let the evil spirits appear on the Earth.
The Celts then lit large
bonfires, dressed up as witches and ghosts to frighten away the evil
Later, November 1 became a Christian holiday
as All Saints Day or All Hallows.
The night before that day was called the Eve of All Hallows or Halloween.
In the United States, in
England and in many other places around the world, people have lots of fun on
Halloween. They make Jack-o-lanterns. How? They make a scary face on a pumpkin, put a candle inside and put it in the window.
Children dress up as witches and ghosts and go trick-or-treating. Some
of them knock on their neighbors’ door and run away. Others stay and get a
treat. Children also go to parties and play lots of games, like ‘apple bobbing’
or treasure hunt.
My favourite game-- apple
bobbing .You fill a bucket with water and apples, and everyone has to pick up an apple with their teeth. You get very wet!
opinion Halloween is good fun if you don’t take it too seriously and scare yourself.
It is a good excuse to have a party!
